LOTS of courses, NOT enough signed contracts?

Don't know about you?

But in my line of work…

I run into folks ALL THE TIME, who see REI as the "vehicle" to speed them towards a low stress, high-income life where they ACTUALLY have time.

They have time to:

  • Play with the kids…
  • Go to sports events, plays, recitals (etc)...
  • Take the husband/ wife out to dinner every weekend…
  • Take evening drives in their shiny new (reliable) car and...

ALWAYS have the cash on hand for family trips to Paris or Disney (or wherever their heart fancies taking them)...

It's a GREAT vision to hold.

But there's almost always a disconnect...

Between what they SAY they're doing (investing) and what they're REALLY doing (learning about it).

The truth?

They're confused about what to do next in their REI business.

And I don't blame them.

Why?

Because in their hunger for knowledge about "how to Do it the RIGHT way"…

They've bought enough courses to make Robert "Rich Dad" Kiyosaki blush.

They don't know which method or course to tear the crackly cellophane off first?

So they pick one…

And start on module 1.

But life demands their attention — kids, work, bills, etc., so they put it down "temporarily".

When they're ready to resume their training (a few weeks later), a different course catches their eye.

So they put course #1 away and unwrap course #2…

They're excited so they do a video or two and fill out some worksheets...

But life calls again, so they stop.

And they PLAN on finishing it and then going through course #3, just in case it had more details about [fill in the blanks] ...

But they NEVER get around to it.

And when they glance in the direction and look at all the courses they've bought, they nearly break out in hives.

They just have TOO MANY OPTIONS.

And they don't know which method to focus their REI business on?

  • Wholesaling?
  • Rehab?
  • Lease options?
  • Foreclosures?
  • Absentee Owners?
  • Probates?
  • Direct mail?
  • RVM?
  • Facebook Ads?
  • Google Adwords?

I don't blame them…

I was EXACTLY the same way when I first got the REI bug.

I was so consumed by the DREAM of being a "successful" investor, it felt like I bought EVERY REI course on our spinning blue marble.

All I wanted was to LEARN as much as I could and I DIDN'T want to miss anything!

So one day, as I sat in my living room literally surrounded by a pool of UNOPENED plastic wrapped courses (back in 2008, when CDs were still all the rave :-D)

I made a HUGE effort to learn ALL of it …

But I quickly discovered...

I was OVERWHELMED with options and I didn't understand ANY of it.

Like a lot of the people I meet today, I was stuck thinking that MORE information leads to BETTER choices…

But the reality is, the opposite is true?

Let me explain...

What happens when you're given the choice to pick from multiple options?

Common sense says that "more is always better".

But is that really true?

I was reading an article on Medium the other day where the author wrote about a very interesting experiment, he said…

"In 2000, psychologists Sheena Iyengar and Mark Lepper from Columbia and Stanford University published a study about jams (the kind you put on toast, etc).

On a regular day at a local food market, people would find a display table with 24 different kinds of jams. Then on another day, at that same food market, people were given only 6 different types of jam choices.

Guess which display table lead to more sales?

Iyengar and Lepper found was that while the big display table (with 24 jams) generated more interest, people were far less likely to purchase a jar of jam than in the case of the smaller display (about ten times less likely).

The study shows that while choice seems appealing, at first sight, choice overload generates the wrong results." (Source: Medium. Author: Florent)

You can say the same thing about having too many strategies to pick from…

Too many marketing strategies to generate leads from…

Or too many courses to study and implement.

The BOTTOM LINE is...

The MORE options you're faced with, the LESS likely you'll take action.

That's what actual science tells us anyway.
